Ashisage Jizoson (Ashisage Ksitigarbha), Ogimachi, Odawara City

A five-minute-walk from Isaida Station on the Daiyuzan Line.
From the station, go past the railroad crossing and cross the crosswalk on Route 255. Then walk along the one-way street and you will see the site decorated with rows of lanterns created by Yamazaki Lanterns. At its ennichi, or festival, stalls are set up along the street and many visitors come to admire the lanterns. Please come along and enjoy the matsuri with your family and friends.


Odawara Chochin Natsu Matsuri (Odawara Lantern Summer Festival)

Saturday and Sunday in late July every year.
In and around Odawara Joshi Koen (Odawara Castle Park), you can see parades of floats and people dancing the Chochin Odori or Lantern Dance. You can also enjoy a variety of performances, such as traditional Hojo Daiko (Hojo drums) and Odawara Bayashi (Odawara festival music) on the specially built stage. One of the main attractions is the numerous Odawara lanterns made by the city’s elementary school students that are displayed around the outer moat of Odawara castle.

Odawara Chochin Making Classes at the City’s Elementary Schools

With the support of the Odawara Chochin Preservation Society, the Odawara Chochin Production Volunteers’ Society and the Odawara City Tourism Association, The Odawara Hakone Chamber of Commerce and Industry Youth Group has been holding Odawara Chohin Making Classes at the city’s elementary schools for eighteen years. Over 40,000 lanterns have been made so far, and approximately 3,000 lanterns made this year will be displayed around the outer moat and in Ninomaru Plaza of Odawara Joshi Koen (Odawara Castle Park).

● Odawara Chochin making kits were sold at the Nishi-Sagami Tourism Campaign booth at the memorial event of the 150th Anniversary of the Opening of the Port of Yokohama, held in the front plaza of Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, Minato Mirai 21, from Monday, June 26th through Sunday, July 5th, 2009.
